Rethink Your Social Media Strategy

Last updated on March 18th, 2026 at 12:16 pm

When it comes to social media, it’s easy to assume that going wild with content is the best way to get attention. But the truth is simple:

It depends.

It depends on your business. It depends on your brand. It depends on the type of customers you want to attract.

I’ve seen plumbers, landscapers, lawyers, and even doctors post outrageous videos online. Some of it works. Some of it backfires.

Regardless of your industry, one thing is always true:

Everything you post online becomes part of your permanent brand.

People will judge — fairly or unfairly — and when it comes to representing your business, perception matters.

So before you hit “post,” you need a plan.

Why “Just Be Yourself” Isn’t Always Good Advice

People love to say:

“Just be yourself!”

But let’s be honest — some people’s own families don’t even like their “real selves,” so that advice doesn’t always translate well to social media.

No matter how genuine you try to be, people will form their own perception of you. Some will like you. Some won’t. That’s the nature of social media.

So instead of “just be yourself,” try this:

Be intentional. Be strategic. Be thoughtful.

Here’s how.

1. Think Way‑Way‑Far Ahead

Before posting anything, ask yourself:

  • How do I want my business to be perceived?
  • Will this content help or hurt my long‑term brand?
  • Would I be proud of this post five years from now?

Once you post it, it can take on a life of its own.

Have someone you trust review your content before it goes live. A second set of eyes can save you from a lifetime of regret.

2. Post With a Sense of Service

People can feel your intention.

If your content looks like you’re posting just to post, it won’t create the emotional connection that makes people trust you.

Your content should show:

  • That you care
  • That you’re knowledgeable
  • That you’re here to help

If content creation isn’t your strength, that’s OK. Recognize it — and hire someone who can help your business shine online.

3. Don’t Waste People’s Time

People go to social media for one of three reasons:

  • To be informed
  • To be educated
  • To be entertained

That’s it.

If your content doesn’t deliver one of these three values, people won’t stick around.

So always create with purpose:

  • Inform
  • Educate
  • Entertain

If you can combine all three, you’ve hit the jackpot.

4. Attract Your Loyal Customer

Most everyone on social media talks about getting thousands or even millions of views and likes. But here’s the truth:

Views don’t pay the bills. Loyal customers do.

I would rather have 800–10,000 loyal subscribers who trust me, than 1 million viewers who only show up for entertainment.

Now — if your business is entertainment, then by all means, chase the views.

But for most SBOs on social media, the goal is to attract:

  • Loyal customers
  • Loyal followers
  • Loyal supporters

And yes — entertaining content can help you grow, but just remember:

Your social media content will brand your business, whether you intend it to or not.

5. Stay Away From Controversy

We all have opinions. But not everyone wants to hear them.

Sharing controversial opinions online rarely changes the world — but it can change how your community views your business.

When your goal is to promote your business:

  • Avoid heated debates
  • Avoid political arguments
  • Avoid controversial topics

Keep it friendly. Keep it social. Keep it focused on your business and your customers.

If I Had to Sum It All Up…

Think Before You Post.

Your social media presence is part of your brand. Protect it. Shape it. Use it intentionally.
